Tonight at The Actors Space I worked on a gem of a scene from the (1962) Academy Award Nominated Film, Gypsy.  Gypsy is based on the Broadway hit musical about the life and times of burlesque dancer, Gypsy Rose Lee, and her aggressive stage mother, Rose.

The scene: Gypsy taking control of her life and career and removing her mother from the picture.  The characters: Debra Lynn Hull as Mama Rose, myself as Gypsy Rose Lee.  The overall comment from Joe Palese: “Nice work. I felt the tension in the room the minute you walked on stage.”

Debra and I worked on this scene last week in class, and were a little rushed.  We raised the stakes and changed our objectives to make the scene more interesting.  The Result: a solid scene about the power struggle between an overbearing stage mom and a empowered daughter who is standing up to her mother for the first time.
