First Day of Filming “Abner, The Invisible Dog”

Jennifer on set with co-stars Jane Kean and Ted Monte

I started filming “Abner”, a new Independent Feature Film on November 18th.  “Abner” is a kids movie and I have been cast as the mother of the lead character.   The first day of filming I met my co-stars, Ted Monte and Jane Kean.  What an honor to work with both of them.  Jane Kean was a series regular on “The Jackie Gleason Show”, starred in Pete’s Dragon (a personal fav when I was a kid) and has a resume that spans decades.   Ted Monte plays my husband in the film and he has also been working for years.  Both actors were really nice and funny.   It was a great way to start my 5 day shoot!

Co-Star Audition

On Friday, I had an audition for a co-star role in a show on the CW.  This is my third co-star audition since signing with Clear Talent Group (thanks to Brianna and Nelson!).  On a side note, curious about what it means to audition for a co-star?  Read this post: https://jenniferkeller.wordpress.com/2012/09/07/co-star-audition/.

I’m going to keep the name of this show confidential so I can talk  in detail about the audition and my preparation for it.  Releasing information about a TV show, film or commercial that you, the actor, auditions for is a BIG “no, no”.   The Entertainment Industry prides itself in the element of surprise.

I checked my e-mail and read through the sides. The role was a “Pageant Mom” of a 7-year-old girl.  So how did I prepare for that?  I watched TLC’s “Toddlers and Tiaras” online.  Seriously.  I’m not familiar with the world of kids pageants, and this might sound cliché,  but it gave me some new ideas for my character.

Afterwards I chose my outfit to get “in character” and practiced my lines. A lot of work for a couple of lines, but totally worth it!!  The whole process is very exciting for me.

The next day I arrived at the studio and checked in with security. Surprisingly, there were not any other actresses in the waiting room.  I actually like to see who else is auditioning for the role.  It gives me an idea of what the Casting Director might be looking for.

The Casting Associate  walked in and called my name. I was brought into a small audition room with a blue wall and a small camcorder.  Generally speaking, co-star roles are taped for the producers to watch. The role is then cast off the tape.  The Casting Associate asked me to give three different interpretations of the scene without stopping the camera in between takes.  That’s where your training comes in–I didn’t have time to stop and think about my delivery, I had to trust my instincts.

Overall, I felt like I gave three distinct interpretations for this character.  That’s all I can ask for.  Now, if I fit what casting is looking for, then I’ll get the role. But I know I left the studio feeling like I did my job well.

Co-Star Audition

Today I had a co-star audition for a new Fall TV Show called “Animal Practice”.  “Animal Practice” is a comedy about a Veterinarian who does not like his patients’ owners.  Check it out, it’s pretty funny.

First of all, let’s talk about what a co-star is.  I know the terms can be pretty confusing: co-star, guest-star, recurring, series regular…what does it all mean?  A co-star is a small role in one episode of a TV Show.  The size of a co-star role can vary from episode to episode.  Sometimes a co-star is in one scene, such as a nurse, secretary or cop, and has a line or two. A co-star can also be a supporting character to a series regular (a starring character who is seen in every episode) and may be in a couple different scenes with a line or two in each scene. And, according to Nelson at Clear Talent, can sometimes work up to a week on the whole episode.

For those of us actors who are just starting out in TV, the co-star role is a chance to get a foot in the door. Like any other profession, an actor has to work their way up the ladder by starting with co-star bookings, then guest star roles (meaning the storyline centers around that particular character, or they have a larger and more significant role in the script) and ideally recurring guest star and series regular roles.

Are there actors who climb the ladder quickly and after one booking find themselves auditioning for series regulars?  Of course.  But there are also actors who work regularly as guest stars and co-stars and have not been able to break into a series regular role. And there are actors all over LA just trying to get their foot in the door with auditions for co-star roles.

So, this was a big opportunity! Very exciting.

Back to the audition.  I was thrilled to receive the call from Clear Talent Group about this audition.  The first thing I did was read through the sides, which included 2 different scenes.   Next, I checked out the producers and director on IMDB so I would be familiar with their work and style. Lastly, I needed to become familiar with this new show so I would understand the tone of the scene and (very importantly) know who my character was talking to.  I easily found the pilot on Hulu and settled in to watch it.

As I wrote above, the show is funny.  It is a single camera comedy, from the producers of “The Office” and “Community”.  I know I’ll be watching for the next episode in 2 weeks!

Once I understood the tone of the show, I worked on my lines and (also very importantly) picked out my outfit.  I needed to make sure I chose something that fit the character.  Once “in costume”, I could continue the work to find this character.

The audition was at 10 am this morning for Lisa Miller Katz Casting. I was so afraid of morning traffic that I left super early and arrived with 25 minutes to spare.  It’s always better to be early!!  I found the casting office and signed in.  Of course, I had to look around the room at the other ladies auditioning.  I always look at what everyone else is wearing.   I guess I want to make sure my outfit choice was spot on. It was. Whew!

Before I knew it,  I was up.  My agent had already informed me that this audition would be on tape for producers. I met with the Casting Associate,  Sibby Kirchgessner.  I actually met Sibby several years ago when I worked as a Career Consultant at AIA Studios. It was nice to see her again.

Overall I thought the audition went well.  We did two takes on camera and I felt confident about that second take.

Thanks to Brianna and Nelson at Clear Talent Group for sending me out and to Lisa Miller Katz Casting for calling me in!

Commercial Callback at Brigid McBride Casting

I was very excited to receive a call from my agents on Monday about a callback for Brigid McBride Casting.  I just fell in  love with this super cute commercial spot.

The callback was same day, scheduled for 2:45 PM in Santa Monica.  I left the house super early.  The 405 South was completely clear, and I arrived in Santa Monica 40 minutes early.  I circled the block, checked my e-mail on my phone, and then wandered into the audition 20 minutes early.

The audition was at a different location, 902 Colorado.  This is the same location as the audition I had at Dan Bell Casting last week.  I signed in with Lucy, and waiting to be paired with another actor.  We chatted about the last audition with Dan Bell Casting and all the cute kiddos that were in the lobby.

I also spotted Mike, the casting associate from the original audition.  He is a funny guy.  I like how he breaks down the scene. He brought each group of actors into the audition room and introduced them.

I was paired with a really cool actor.  We went over our lines a few times and then spent the rest of the time gabbing and building a rapport for the audition.

I wore the same outfit from the original audition, a blue dress with a cardi belted around my waist and knee high boots.  As I was standing waiting to walk into the audition room, I looked down and noticed I had a big run in my nylons!  Eek.  Just then the door opened and we were ushered in.  Se la vie!

We met the client and the director and then slated for the camera.  A slate is a quick greeting, introducing yourself on camera.

The other actor I was paired with was great.  I felt we worked well together.  We had two takes, the second we took notes for the director.

Thank you to Casting Director, Brigid McBride, for the callback!!

Commercial CALLBACK

My daughter and I had a callback at Dan Bell Casting!  We were scheduled for a 2 PM callback on Tuesday, April 17th.

When we arrived the casting office was filled with adorable babies and toddlers!  My sweet pea wanted to talk to each of them, so we walked around the room and made new friends. We also met Dan Bell in the lobby, who was very nice.

Before I knew it, we were up.  Dan escorted us into the room and we met the clients and the director.  The casting associate gave me the rundown for the commercial and the director gave a few notes before calling “Action”.   My girl was really cute, talking to me and pointing out things in the room.  I think she did a great job.

Thank you to Dan Bell Casting for the callback!!

Commercial Audition at Dan Bell Casting

Friday was a day of firsts! My 15 month old and I had our first Mother/Daughter Commercial Audition at Dan Bell Casting, an office I’ve never auditioned at before.

Our audition was scheduled for 11:20 AM.  Since the baby naps at 11:30 AM (was acting particularly grumpy that morning),  I packed her up early in an effort to arrive early at the casting office in Santa Monica   My hope was that we would audition and then the baby would be able to sleep in the car on the ride home. However, when we arrived, I realized she had fallen asleep in her carseat!  I decided to let her sleep.  At ten after 11, I woke her and packed her in the stroller. Luckily there were not too many tears! I gave her some snacks.  I’ve learned that distraction is the key to parenting.

My mind was racing as I signed in.  “How will she act in this audition?” I thought to myself. “Will she be grumpy?” “Will she cry?” I decided I couldn’t worry too much about it.  Kids will be kids.

Once we arrived, however, she was really interested in the other babies in the room.  My girl was older than the other babies, who were all between 7 and 10 months old.  She pointed at the other babies and “chatted” with the moms.  Things were looking up!

When it was our turn, we walked into the casting room and met the casting associate.  I had a few lines, the rest of the audition was about the baby.  And she did a great job!  She was just so sweet.  She wasn’t her usual smiley self, but she was chatty and oh so cute.  Even the casting associate couldn’t help but react to her.

I am grateful that our first audition together went so well!  Special thanks to Dan Bell Casting for calling us in and to my agents at CU for submitting us!

Print Casting

On Monday I had a Commercial Print Audition with Currently Casting Inc.  This was the first time I’ve auditioned for this casting office.

The audition was held at On Your Mark Casting Studios in Sherman Oaks.  Lucky for me, this office is just a hop, skip and a jump from my apartment.  I left the munchkin with my awesome hubby and made it to the Studio in record time.

Once I arrived, I signed in and looked up my bar code.  For those of you who are not familiar with “the bar code”, let me fill you in. Maybe 4 years ago a new, Industry recognized casting site called “Casting Frontier” popped up.  This site assigns each actor with a bar code that links to their online actor’s profile.  The casting offices that use Casting Frontier scan each actor’s bar code right before the audition to link that profile to the actor in the room.

I was paired with another actor for the audition and I felt like we had a great rapport, which is always a good thing for auditions.  When it was our turn, we were introduced to the casting director,  Michelle Metzner.  What a sweet woman!  Michelle was so likable and friendly in the room.  It was so nice to meet her.

Our bar codes were taken and we were photographed for the print casting call

Special thanks to Michelle Metzner for the audition and to KSR Models for submitting me.

Commercial Print CALLBACK

I had a print callback on Valentine’s Day for a Jeans Company.  I won’t say which one, but I will say the callback was held at 5th & Sunset Studios in Santa Monica.

I arrived early for my 10:45 AM callback.  I had my sweet pea in tow and my good friend Brittani came with me to take care of her while I auditioned.

The models were asked to wear a black swimsuit to the callback and upon arriving were given jeans to try on for the client’s approval.  Models who were approved were then photographed.

I was brought to the changing area with a group of 3 other girls. One girl was already back there finishing up.  The jeans were in all cuts, including high and low waists as well as bootcut and straightleg.

Now, let me just say something about the audition process.

It never ceases to amaze me the things that actors/models say on set. For my readers out there, do not EVER complain or badmouth a product on set or in an audition.  Especially when the clients are sitting right around the corner!

Two of the ladies around me were making smart comments about the high waist jeans and the leg cuts, but what they failed to understand that the callback was not about them, it was about finding the right model for the PRODUCT.  While the 20-some-year-old models may not choose that particular cut, the product is being marketed to a different demographic.  And it is RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL to trash the product on set.

I always worry that the client or casting director will overhear their conversations and think that I am among the trash-talkers in the situation.  I usually keep my mouth shut, distance myself from them or try to say something positive about the product.

So, the moral of the story, be GRATEFUL for every audition. Do NOT trash the product on set. And remember that not only are you auditioning for the current job, but for other opportunities with that same casting director down the line.

Now, back to my experience.

The first pair of jeans I was given was not a good fit for my body type.  The second pair was a different style and much better fit.  I was sent over to the casting director, Michael, and the photographer, Matt.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity. And I’m thankful to casting, and of course to my agents at KSR Models for the opportunity.

A Commercial AND Print Audition

Oh, what a week! Yesterday I had a commercial audition and today I had a print casting. And its only Wednesday. If only every week was like this one!

Yesterday my agent, Richie at CU, called to say that I had an audition at Ross Lacy Casting.  I am grateful for every opportunity to audition for this busy office.

I arrived early at 200 S. La Brea for the audition.   There were a number of people in the waiting room, which meant I would be there a while. No worries though, just part of the job.

I had the munchkin with me,  unfortunately. Generally I am able to find a babysitter for same day auditions, but occasionally I can not.  That’s part of the challenge of balancing my career and my personal life.  So we walked the waiting room and made new friends.  My munchkin is a really sweet girl.  She has to “talk” to everyone.  She has 14 words in her vocabulary (which is pretty good for a 13 month old), but she “babbles” complete conversations with everyone she meets.  I just have to laugh.

Soon it was my turn to audition. The commercial spot was great. This was for a “non-mom” spot, casual dress. I met a new casting associate, Michael, who was really cool.

All I can do is keep my fingers  crossed for a callback.

Today KSR Models sent me to Armstrong Casting for a commercial print casting call. I haven’t auditioned at this office since I was pregnant, so it was good to be back. I’ve always enjoyed auditioning at Armstrong Casting.  First the photographer takes the photos, then flips on a video camera and asks a couple of questions so they can get a better sense of who you are.

There were a number of moms in the waiting room with babies.  It was good to see that I’m not the only one trying to make it work.  And to those moms, I tip my figurative hat.  It’s not easy. But if you have a dream, you go for it.

Special thanks to Casting Directors Ross Lacy and Yvonne Armstrong for the auditions.

Commercial CALLBACK!

Today I had a commercial callback for Sabyn Mayfield Casting.  The callback was at 2701 Oceanpark Casting Facility,  a different location than the original audition.

When I arrived, the casting associate from the other day, Ian, walked out of the audition room.  I smiled at him as I waited my turn to audition.  We were told that the audition would be the same as the other day and I was paired with another actor.

I greeted the clients and the director as I walked in. They were really friendly. Often the clients do not talk to the actors during the audition. Ian checked us in and called action.  And it a blink of an eye, the callback was over.  There was a real ease to the it, and so I left happy.

Thanks to my agents at Commercials Unlimited for submitting me and to everyone at Sabyn Mayfield Casting for the callback!

Commercial CALLBACK!

Friday I had a commercial callback for Joe Blake Casting.  The callback was in Santa Monica, but at a different location than the original audition.

It was a misty and cool day in Los Angeles, but lucky for me, traffic on the 405 was moving!  I arrived in record time, and with 15 minutes to spare.  There wasn’t any parking near the audition location. But luckily I found a spot a block away.

When I arrived, the casting associate from the other day, Nicholas, was there.  I greeted him as I signed in.  Two other women were there when I arrived, and soon after 3 more showed up.  I was the only blonde in that group.

We were told that the audition would be the same as the other day.  I was the second person to audition.

I greeted the clients and the director as I walked in. Nicholas called action and gave my audition.  And I felt really good about it.

The funny thing about auditions, you can give the best audition of your life and if you don’t have the right look the client wants, then you won’t be cast.  Similarly, you can have a so/so audition, but if you have the look, you’ll get the part.  For that reason, I tried to let auditions “run off my back like water”. I can’t dwell on them, I can’t think about what I could or couldn’t have done in the room.  I just have to trust that I did my job, and I did it well.

Special thanks to my wonderful agents at Commercials Unlimited for submitting me and to Joe Blake for the callback!

Commercial Audition at Joe Blake Casting

Today my commercial agent, Richie, notified me of a same day commercial audition.  I was thrilled to received the call. It has been a quiet couple of months for me.

The audition was for Joe Blake Casting at Ocean Park Studios in Santa Monica. The product, Jimmy Dean.

It is a rare day when the 405 is clear, and today was that day.  I zipped down to Santa Monica in record time.  I arrived 20 minutes early and looked over the story boards and sides.  There were several women ahead of me, so I just signed in and waited for my chance.  Before I knew it, the casting associate, Nicholas, asked us into the audition room to explain the set up for the audition. Nicholas was very friendly and brought a great ease to the room.

I have to say, this is a cute spot.  I am so happy to have had the chance for this audition.  And I left the audition feeling confident.

Special thanks to Joe Blake for the audition!

Two Commercial Auditions on Thursday

Oh what a day!  I had two commercial auditions today.  The life of an actress at it’s best!

First stop was Broad-Cast at 9 AM. Getting out of the house in the morning is so tough now that I’m a mom.  I’m sure that once I am no longer nursing, it will be a lot easier.  Right now, baby girl calls the shots.  But thanks to my helpful hubby, I was able to hand her off to him and get ready for the audition.  Traffic was heavy on the 101, but I made it in the nick of time.

The audition was for Target.  It was a short, non dialogue spot.  I greeted casting associate, Hunter, who I often see at Broad-Cast and was in and out of the audition room.

Second stop was Julia Kim Casting at 4 PM.  This was my first time auditioning for Julia Kim, and I love auditioning for new casting directors. This audition was for Aquafresh Toothpaste.   There was a bit of a wait when I arrived.  I read over the audition info and signed in.  I noticed that waiting room was filled with actresses in the late 20’s – early 30’s range, as well as actresses in the 14 -16 year old range.  And between you and me, any passing thought that I might have had that I could play a high school student (Hello “Glee”) has officially been put to rest.   I am just too tall to start with, and standing next to one of those teens in the restroom, I really did look like a woman in my late 20’s – early 30’s. Though how old am I?  I will never tell.  I joke that I am 25 as long as I’m an actress.  Or at the least an age range, 25-30.

I was at the audition for almost an hour, and then if was my turn.  This spot was also non-dialogue and the audition was a quick one.

Overall I was very happy with both auditions.  Special thanks to Casting Directors Dan Cowan and Julia Kim for the opportunity to audition!

Commercial Audition at Davis Baddeley Casting

Today I had a commercial audition at Davis Baddeley Casting.  This is my second audition since returning from Maternity Leave and my first time auditioning for this office.

Today’s spot was for Procter and Gamble.   I arrived 10 minutes early for my morning audition at The Casting Underground in Hollywood.   As I waited, an actress I worked with on “The Cavemen Crib Party” webisode arrived to audition as well.  I was glad to see her.  She and I were pregnant at the same time, so we would bump into each other at maternity auditions last year.  Now we are both new moms, so it was great to talk about our experiences

Before I knew it, I was up.  Everyone was so nice in the room and this is a great commercial spot, so I’m grateful to Davis Baddeley Casting for calling me in to audition for the first time

Commercial Audition at Broadcast

Today I had a commercial audition at Broadcast.  This was my first commercial audition since returning from Maternity Leave and I have to admit, I was a little stressed.

First of all, I have to say I LOVE auditioning at Broadcast.  Everyone is so nice and they have been so sweet to me.  I booked Tidy Cat and American Express Commercials through Broadcast.  But I was stressing because getting out of the ouse on time with a newborn is tough.  I’ve quickly learned that the baby calls the shots!  And there are so many questions. Should I find a sitter for the baby?  Do I take her with me to the audition?  The good news, I already had plans with a girlfriend of mine, so I immediately called her, and she agreed to meet me at Broadcast and watch the baby while I auditioned.  I’m a lucky gal to have such a good friend

Today’s spot was for Natural Choice. This was a fun, non-dialogue spot

Special Thanks to Dan Cowan at Broadcast for the audition

Photos from the Barnes and Noble Commercial Shoot

On October 21, 2010 I filmed a Barnes and Noble National Commercial.  The product: the new Nookcolor E-reader. Since the commercial is now airing nationally, I wanted to post a couple of photos from set:

The "Waiting Room" actors

The commercial shot at an abandoned hospital in North Hollywood.  Apparently the hit TV show, Scrubs, once shot at this same location.

And here is a photo of me looking very much like a “Waiting Room Pregnant Lady”:

No, that is not a fake bump! Jennifer Keller is 7 1/2 months pregnant in this commercial

Commercial Audition at Skirts Casting

Today I had a commercial audition at Skirts Casting.  This is my first time auditioning for this office.

Today’s spot was for Hyndai.   I arrived at The Casting Lounge on South LaBrea for my morning audition. There is only street parking at The Casting Lounge and I had to park all the way at the end of the street!  Usually this isn’t a big deal, but when you’re 9 months pregnant it takes double the time to walk to the casting office, lol.

There was a bit of a wait and I noticed that I was the only pregnant girl in the waiting room.  So, this was not a commercial looking for pregnant actresses.  But no worries, I was thrilled to be called in and I gave it my best.

Thanks to Skirts Casting for calling me in to audition for the first time

Commercial Callback at Shane Casting

Today I had a commercial callback a Hallmark Commercial at Shane Casting.  What a treat.  This is my first time auditioning for this office and I was called back as well.

The callback was running behind schedule, but I was happy to be there.  I chatted with the other actors in the room.  I noticed there were not a lot of blondes in the room.  I’m guessing they are looking for brunettes, but I was lucky to get the callback as well.

Finally, it was my turn to audition.  I greeted director and the client. The callback was quick.  I hope I’m what they are looking for.

When I was leaving I looked at the time and realized that I had been in the casting office for an hour.  And I had only put in enough coins in the meter for 35 minutes.  It hadn’t even crossed my mind that until that minute.  I walked out of the casting office and spotted my car across the street.  Sure enough, I saw the ticket on my windshield.  When I got to my car I saw it had been issued about 1 minute after my meter was due to expire.  Looks like they were waiting for it.  And the ticket is for $55…ouch.

Ah, the life of an actress….

But what’s important is that I got the callback. Thanks to Shane Casting for both the audition and callback!

Commercial Audition at Shane Casting

Today I had a commercial audition for Shane Casting.  This is my first time auditioning for this office.  I am always excited to audition for a new casting director!

Today’s spot was for Hallmark.   I arrived at the casting facility at 660 Santa Monica for my 1 1:00 AM audition 10 minutes early.  I signed in and didn’t have to wait long for my turn to audition.

I met the Casting Associate, Ian, who gave the instructions for the audition. I remembered him from an audition had earlier this year.  He is very nice.

Thanks to Shane Casting for calling me in to audition for the first time!

Commercial Audition for Cathi Carlton Casting

Today my commercial agent, Richie, notified me of a same day commercial audition for Cathi Carlton Casting.  The audition was held at 2701 Ocean Park Casting Facility in Santa Monica.  Not only was it a same day audition, I needed to be in Santa Monica in an hour and a half and I was in Woodland Hills.  Luckily I had my hair and make up done from an audition earlier, but I didn’t have time to choose my wardrobe, I had to go with what I was wearing, which was jeans and a blue tank.  I was near a Kohls so I made a quick run to the store and picked up a dark gray cardigan for a more “mom” look.

The audition was for a young mom for a Chevrolet commercial.  There was a long wait in the casting office. I looked around the room and saw that I was the only pregnant actress auditioning.  That could be a good thing or a bad thing.

I auditioned with a shy 5-year-old for this commercial.  I had to crouch down to her level, which was tough with my big 7 1/2 month pregnant belly.  So I felt a little off on my lines.  But I’m still grateful for the opportunity.

Special Thanks to Cathi Carlton for the audition!

Commercial Audition at Lisa Pantone Casting

Today I had a commercial audition for Lisa Pantone at The Casting Lounge on South LaBrea.  The audition was for a pregnant woman in a commercial spot.

There are just so many cute pregnant actresses in LA right now.   I gabbed with two other girls about our pregnancies while we were waiting for our turn to audition.

I am always happy to audition for Lisa Pantone.  She is a lot of fun.  Lisa is right there in the room for the audition and gives direction on what the client is looking for.

Special thanks to Lisa Pantone for the audition!

Commercial Audition at Broadcast

Today I had a commercial audition for Dan Cowan at Broad Cast.  Dan is a great commercial casting director and  I am happy to get a call from his office any time.  The audition was for GMC and the attire was upscale casual.

I walked into the casting office and was greeted by Hunter, a casting associate that I have seen many times before at Broadcast. Now I haven’t seen Hunter since I started showing, and when I walked in he exclaimed “What happened to you?”  Pretty funny actually.

The audition was a non-dialogue spot and I auditioned with a guy who played my spouse.  I’ve got to say, I love this spot.  Very clever.

Special thanks to Dan Cowan for the audition today!

Commercial Audition for TLC/Booth

Today I had a commercial audition for Loree Booth Casting.  This is my first time auditioning for this office.  I am always excited to audition for a new casting director!

Today’s spot was for a Lenscrafters.   I arrived at the casting facility at 6521 Homewood Ave for my 1:20 PM audition about 10 minutes early.  I signed in and waited for my turn to audition.

The spot was calling for a blonde woman in nice attire, but not neccesarily a pregnant woman.  I met the casting director and the first thing he said was “wow, you are with child”.  Hopefully I will still be in the running for this spot.

The audition was quick.  A non dialogue spot.  But I felt good about it.

Special thanks to Loree Booth for calling me in to audition for the first time!

Another Print Audition at Armstrong Casting

Today I had a Print Audition at Armstrong Casting in Hollywood.  The audition was for Tempur-Pedic, looking  for pregnant women wearing shorts and a tank.  Today was cool and rainy in Los Angeles, so I waited to change into my audition clothes until I arrived at the Casting Office.  I wore a rosy pink tank and white shorts for the audition.

I have been invited to audition for several print castings at Armstrong Casting in the last year and I’ve always enjoy the experience.  First the photographer takes a couple photos, then they flip on a video camera and ask a couple questions so they can get a better sense of who you are.

Special thanks to Casting Director Yvonne Armstrong for the audition.

Print Audition at Armstrong Casting

Today I had a Print Audition at Armstrong Casting in Hollywood.  The product was Microsoft and the call was for pregnant women dressed in green.  I looked through my closet and I did not have anything green to wear for the audition.  But I do have a greenish, teal dress so I decided to wear that to the audition.

There were so many cute pregnant girls in the waiting room.  What a tough decision for casting!

Callback at Sanford Casting

Today I had a commercial callback for Kay Jewelers at Michael Sanford Casting.  A rule of thumb is to always wear the same outfit to the callback that you wore to the original audition.  I would have preferred to put on a nicer outfit, but I decided to stick with the jeans and cardigan I wore originally when I went to the audition  straight from work.

My callback was at 11 am.  It was going to be tight, I had a 2PM flight out of LAX.  So I arrived at the callback 20 minutes early and signed in.

I found out quickly that they were behind schedule…45 minutes behind.  So all I could do is wait.  I didn’t want to get myself all worked up about the time crunch because that would throw off my callback.  And I was thrilled to be there.  Any chance to book a commercial I am grateful for  So I chatted with a couple of girls in the waiting room  And a nice girl even let me go ahead of her.

The callback went great.  Michael welcomed me into the room where I met the director.  The clients were there as well.  Commercial callbacks are interesting.  As usual, the clients were all typing away on their computers when I walked in.  The director directs and they watch on the monitor.

I director seemed to like me.  He was very complimentary.  I was even asked to use a couple different pieces of jewelry.

When I left the callback I didn’t have a lot of time to get to the airport.  Instead of parking at the flyaway I drove straight to LAX.  By the Grace of God I made it to the airport an hour before my plane took off.   And I made my flight!

What a day!

Audition at Sanford Casting

Today my commercial agent, Richie, notified me of a same day commercial audition for Kay Jewelers.  Not only was it a same day audition, I needed to be in Hollywood in 45 minutes!  I was at work at  AIA Studios and I didn’t have time to change or style my hair, so I just jumped in my car.  I was wearing jeans and a gray cardigan.

The audition was for Michael Sanford Casting. I first met Michael about almost 3 years ago at a workshop and this is the second time he has invited me to audition!  Very cool. The audition was held at The Casting Underground in Hollywood.

I’ve always wanted to audition for Kay Jewelers.  I was paired with a guy who played my husband and I thought we had great chemistry together.

The only problem, the callback is on the 17th and I have 7am flight booked to Cleveland to visit family.  If they call me for a callback, I’ll have to try to change my flight.  I will be back in LA for the shoot.

Three Auditions on Thursday

Wow!  What a day.  Today I had three auditions.  Lucky me!

First  I had a commercial audition at Ross Lacy Casting.  Today’s product was Olive Garden.  The attire: casual with a white button down shirt.  I arrived at 200 S. La Brea and signed in for my audition.  I read the sides and really liked the character.  Good audition!

Next I drove over to CAZT to audition for a webisode called “Insatiable”, which was described as “Twilight meets Twin Peaks”.  I auditioned for the role of Abby, a superficial, small town real estate agent with an agenda.

Lastly I had an audition at Big House Casting in Studio City for an indie film.  I auditioned for the role of Carol, a sweet, pregnant wife.  The only lovable character in a dysfunctional family.

Thanks to each Casting Director for the audition.

Film Audition

Today I had an audition for a short film called “Anything Can Happen”.   I auditioned for the role of Nicole who is described as “a woman who is a fairly successful B list actress but is trying to transition into bigger projects/roles. Pretty, pretentious and snappy but also has a sweet, insecure side.”

I arrived for auditions at CAZT for my 11AM time slot.  I received the sides prior to the audition, had made my character choices, and was ready for the audition.  When it was my turn to audition I met with the Casting Director, Jessica Sherman, who gave me a warm welcome.  I was given a couple of notes before I started the scene and then we started.  The audition was just one take, but I felt good about my choices.

Commercial Print Audition

Today I had a commercial print audition for Tori Silvera Bush at Bad Girls Casting (great name, right?).  Today’s spot was for Lynnina Swim Wear.

I have to tell you, I was nervous about this one.  Yes, I used to compete in pageants, but that was a couple years ago.  I actually ran out and bought a new swimsuit for the audition, a black two piece suit with boy shorts.

The audition was at 6660 Santa Monica Blvd, a casting facility where I have auditioned before.  I signed in and recognized the Casting Associate, Ian, right away.   He took me into the audition room where I met the casting director and the client.  Once in the room, the audition was on camera.   They asked me to try on a swimsuit with a tankini top and shorts for bottoms.  I left the room to put on the new swimsuit, then returned for a new shot on camera.

Thanks to KSR Models for sending me out and to Casting Director Tori Silvera Bush for calling me in!

Film Audition

Today I had an audition for an indie feature film called “Dick Little”.    I auditioned for the role of Amy.

I arrived for auditions at CAZT for my afternoon audition and picked up the sides, which were not available prior.  I read over the material and it was so sweet.  A fun little romantic comedy.  When it was my turn,  I received a very warm welcome from the Director.  I read through the scene with the reader and I felt really good about it!

Commercial Audition at Broad Cast

Today my commercial agent, Randi, called me to say that casting had requested me for a Sears Commercial in one hour.  She asked if I could make it.  I was thrilled!  Of course I can make it.  I knew it would be tight,  but I jumped in the shower right away.  I got ready really quick, and did most of my make up in the car at red lights, but I made it in time!

Today’s audition was for Dan Cowan at Broad Cast.  Dan is a great casting director who calls me in often and has even booked me.  I am happy to get a call from his office any time.  The attire was casual young mom so I wore jeans and a Tiffany blue cardigan.

The audition was a non-dialogue spot.  It was quick but fun.

Special thanks to Dan Cowan for the audition today!

Audition at Sanford Casting

I am very excited!  Today I had an audition for Michael Sanford Casting. I first met Michael about almost 2 years ago at a workshop and then saw him again last fall at AIA Studios.   And today he invited me to audition for the first time!

Today’s audition was for an HBO promo for True Blood.  The attire: Conservative Midwest Woman. They said they were not looking for “model types”, so I wore light make up and pulled my hair back.  I also wore my glasses to the audition.

I arrived at the casting office a couple minutes early wearing a conservative cardigan and skirt with pearl earrings and flats.  I read the character description and the information for the scene.  When it was my turn, I was paired with a guy who was to play my husband. The Casting Associate walked us through what they were looking for.  He told me to “lose the glasses”, which I did.

During the audition, Michael walked in the room, it was nice to be able to say hello.

It was so nice to audition at Sanford Casting.  Special thanks to Michael Sanford for the opportunity!!

Commercial Audition at Ross Lacy Casting

I had a commercial audition at Ross Lacy Casting today!  Today’s product was a hair product called Schwarzkopf.  The audition was calling for blondes, which is great for me.  The attire: sexy city chic.

I arrived at 200 S. La Brea wearing a pencil skirt and a royal purple cardigan with a skinny belt around my waist.  Since it was a hair product commercial, I wanted to make sure my hair looked great.  I curled it up and it looked pretty.  I was paired with another girl for the audition who was a different ethnicity.  Michael, the casting associate, gave the instructions for the audition once we were in the room.  I was assigned 2 lines, as was the other girl I auditioned with. There was also a lot of “business” at the beginning of the scene before we gave our lines.

I have to say, I felt really great about this audition.  This was a great character for me and I really went for it.  Now all I can do is let it go.  You’ve got to let auditions “roll of your back like water” in this industry.  It is my job to audition, and audition well and I felt I did that today.  After that, it is up to what the client is looking for.

Special thanks to my awesome agents at CU for believing in me and for sending me out on great auditions and also thanks to Ross Lacy Casting for calling me in!!

Commercial Audition for Jennifer

Today I had a commercial audition for Laray Mayfield Casting.  Today’s spot was for a big International Commercial Campaign for Dior.   I auditioned for a similar spot last month, but this wasn’t a callback.

I recognized the Casting Associate, Ian, right away when I walked in the room.  He gave the instructions for the audition.  They were similar to the first audition, but more specific, which led me to believe that hadn’t found what they were looking for the first round.

Thanks to Laray Mayfield for the audition!

Commercial Print Audition

Yesterday KSR Models sent me to Beachwood Studios for a print casting.  The Print Campaign was for Levi’s Jeans. I arrived at the studio wearing jeans and high heels, as asked for in the breakdown.  I wore light make-up and my hair down, which looked great on this particular day.

I checked in with Rupert, who was very nice.  There was not wait and I quickly met the photographer and assistant to took my measurements.  The photographer instructed me to pose for the audition and after a couple quick shots, I was released.

Commercial Audition

Today I had a commercial audition for Gabrielle Schary Casting.  This is my first time auditioning for this office.  I am always excited to audition for a new casting director!

Today’s spot was for a Lash Appeal.   I arrived at the casting facility at 2601 Ocean Park Blvd for my 5:50 PM audition 20 minutes early.  You never know what traffic is going to look like on the 405 at rush hour, so I wanted to give myself plenty of time.  Lucky for me, the roads were pretty clear. I’ll have to remember this day, clear roads on the 405 do not happen very often.

When I arrived at the casting facility there were a number of girls of all types and looks waiting in the lobby.  I signed in and waited my turn to audition.  The commercial was a non-dialogue spot and was a really cute.

Thanks Gabrielle Schary for calling me to audition for the first time!  Hope to audition for you again.

Co-Star Audition for Jennifer

Today I had at TV co-star audition!  I was called in for the role of  a victim in a new episode of “Criminal Minds”.  Last fall I met Erica Silverman, the Casting  Associate for “Criminal Minds” at April Webster Casting, at a workshop at AIA Studios.  This is the second time she has called me in for an audition!

I prepared the sides and arrived at the casting office 15 minutes before my audition.  There were a number of young women my age who were called in for the role.  I walked by a couple of girls leaving as I walked onto the studio lot and a couple of girls arrived after me.

Erica walked into the waiting room to check off the next name on the list.  She recognized me and even gave me a hug.  I have to say Erica is such a sweet, bubbly person.  She makes everyone feel at ease.

This audition was for producers, meaning in addition to the casting director being in the room, two producers for the show were also there for the audition, as well as the writer of the episode.  Everyone was friendly when I walked in.

The audition was quick.  One take and it was over.  No notes or redirects.  I thanked everyone for inviting me in and left the lot.

What a thrill.  Thank you Erica Silverman so much for the opportunity to audition for you.  It was such a treat!

Audition for Jennifer

Today I had an audition for a new web series called “Stoned High”.   The Series is projected to film 10 Episodes of 10 minutes each for the web.  I auditioned for Samantha Kennedy who is described as “fit body, mid 20’s, BLONDE, was Prom-Queen in 2002”.

I arrived for auditions at the Taft Building in Hollywood.  I was glad to have an early audition time, because there was a ton of people there and the casting session prior to the web series was running over.  I was given just a 1/2 sheet of paper with a couple lines.  I made my choices and waited my turn. When it was my turn to audition, it was on camera.

Overall I felt good about my character choices and hope to receive a callback.

Commercial Callback

Today I had a commercial callback for Hershey’s at Broadcast.  I was super excited, this spot is cute.   I was paired with a fellow CU client named PJ and I thought we played off each other well.

They asked me if I would consider being an extra in the commercial, but I said no.  It be fun, but would be a huge conflict for other commercials down the line.  I hope I made the right decision.

Thanks you Dan Cowan for the audition!

Commercial Audition

Today I had a commercial audition for Casting Director, Dan Cowan, at Broad-Cast. I am always glad to be called in for an audition for Dan Cowan.  The commercial was for KFC.  The type: mom.

I ran into a slow down on La Brea on the way to the audition.  I don’t know if it was a stalled vehicle, accident, or what but I was stressed out!  After putting down the street, I cut down a side street and was able to get to the audition site just minutes before the audition.  Not good.  .

I walked in to the casting office, signed in right on the dot, and looked over the storyboards as I caught my breath.  The door to the audition room opened right away and they were ready for me.

This was a non-dialogue spot and afterwards I walked out and just felt okay about my performance.  Those few minutes before you go into the room are important. I like to give myself enough time to look over the material and make my choices.   I’ll just have do better next time.  I’ am lucky that Dan Cowan calls me in to audition for him often and he knows my work.

Thank you Dan!

Co-Star Audition for Jennifer

Wow! What an exciting day!

Today I had my first TV co-star audition!  I was called in by Kendra Castleberry at Donna Rosenstein Casting for a role in “Castle”.  Great show!  I met Kendra at a 3 workshop at AIA Studios last fall.  I am so excited about today’s audition!

Wondering what a c0-star role is?  A co-star is a supporting character in one episode of a TV Show.  A co-star can be one line, one scene with a series regular, or even a couple scenes with one or two lines in each. Every show is different.

Back to the audition. I prepared the sides and arrived at the casting office 10 minutes before my audition.  There were a number of blonde girls my age who were called in for the role.  I walked by a couple leaving as I walked into the building and I rode the elevator up with another girl, who was very nice.  There wasn’t a bathroom nearby and she lent me her compact mirror for a last-minute touch up.

Kendra walked out of the audition room to check off the next name on the list.  I greeted her with a “good morning” and she said hello back as she asked the next girl to join her in the audition room.  Before I knew it, it was my turn.  I walked in and greeting Angela Scalleta, the casting associate, who was behind the camera.  I have also taken a workshop with Angela at AIA.  The audition was quick.  Kendra directed me in another take and I left feeling like I had given her what she has asked for.

What a thrill.  Thank you Kendra Castleberry so much for the opportunity to audition for you.  It was such a treat!

I also had a Print Audition today. Aurora at KSR Models sent me to Comcast audition.  They are looking for a model from the back of the head.  I arrived at the studio and the photographer took a couple quick pictures.

What a great day!

Commercial Callback

Oh what a morning!!

Today I received a same day callback notification for an Old Navy commercial at Lisa Field Casting.  I was hoping for the callback for this commercial, so I was elated.

The way it works is my agents submit me for an audition through a service called LA Casting and when they send an audition notification through this site, I receive a text message.  I then know to open up my e-mail account and read the audition notification to see where and when the audition or call back is.  Lastly, I call to confirm with my agents.  Well, I received the notification at 10:50 am and the callback was at 11:30 am at The Casting Cafe in West Hollywood, which is 40 minutes away (depending on traffic)!!!

I called to confirm with my agents at CU, and Richie answered the phone, laughing, as he asked if I could make it.  I told him I would be there, but I would never make it by 11:30am.  He told me to get there before 12:45 pm and he would call the Casting Director to let them know.

I just have to chuckle sometimes.  What is the crazy industry that I have chosen and why do I enjoy it all so much?

I jumped in the shower and got ready as quickly as possible.  I left the house right before 11:30 am and arrived at the Casting Cafe about 10 after 12 pm.   I walked into the casting office and there was a sea of brunettes in gowns in the waiting room.  There was only one other blonde, which could be good or bad, depending on how many girls they are casting and what they are looking for.  I signed in at 12:15 pm and there was a wait.  No problem!  It gave me time to file my nails, which were a little jagged.

When it was my turn to audition, I was paired with 2 other girls, one girl with reddish brown hair and one with dark brown hair.  I always like it when I audition with girls who have different looks than me.  Two girls who look alike would not be cast together in the same commercial, unless they were playing sisters.

I walked into the casting room and there were about 5 people in the room, the director and the clients, who are not introduced to us.  Benjamin, the casting associate, is there again running the audition, and he gave us the overview of what they are looking for.

I’ve got to say, I felt great about this audition!  I even received a couple chuckles from the clients on my take, which is always a good sign.  Let’s just hope that I am what they are looking for. Though, I have to say I am quite sensitive about the fact that I was able to make it to the audition right at 11:30am.  I really hope that does not work against me.

Commercial Audition

Today I had a commercial audition at Lisa Field Casting.  The audition was held at The Casting Cafe in West Hollywood.  Today’s audition was for Old Navy.  I’ve wanted to audition for an Old Navy Commercial for years!

This commercial is a non-dialog spot and I auditioned with 2 other girls.  We walked into the audition room and met Benjamin, the casting associate, who explained what the client is looking for.  I can’t say much about the content of the commercial, but I can say that I dusted off a gown to wear, which as a former pageant gal, was such a treat.

The commercial is casting before the holidays, but shoots in January.   I just really like this commercial and am really hoping to be called back for this one.  Oh, it would be a fun shoot!!

New IMDB Credit!

The Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) is a website that tracks film and television projects that actors have worked on.  Today I found out that “Wedding Day”, the Independent Film that I am working on, has been posted on the site. “Wedding Day” is a SAG feature shooting in late March/early April with celebrity cast members and distribution already in place.

Check out the film on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2641302/.   Not all short films are posted on IMDB, so a lot of projects that I have worked on are not listed, which is why I am excited that “Wedding Day” has been updated!

Thanks for checking it out!

Commercial Print Callback

Today I had a callback for a commercial print campaign for US Cellular at Armstrong Casting.

I arrived for the callback dressed in the same outfit I wore to the original audition, khakis and a cardigan.  I saw there were a variety of looks in the room, blondes, brunettes, ethnicities, but I had the youngest look there-which could be a disadvantage since the campaign is calling for a “young mom”.

When it was my turn for the callback, I met the client and had a my photo taken by the photographer. Lastly, as in the original audition, they flipped on a video camera and asked me a couple questions so they could get a better sense of who I am.

Special thanks to Yvonne Armstrong for the callback.

Commercial Callback AND Print Audition!

Oh what a day!  I had both a callback and a print casting. Oh, the life of an actress at it’s best!

Richie at CU called this morning to say that I had been called back for the CBS Promo!  How exciting!  Though, then I realized that I had a print casting at nearly the same time.  I called and e-mailed Aurora at KSR Models to see if I could go to the print casting early, and she said that I could go anytime between 1:30 PM and 5 PM.  What a relief.

I arrived at 200 S. La Brea for the call back at Ross Lacy Casting.  I primped in the bathroom for a couple minutes and then signed in.  I was paired with 3 different people for the audition and was in the last group for this promo.

Afterwards I jumped in the car and headed to Armstrong Casting today for a print casting.  The Print Campaign was for US Cellular.   The attire: young, hip mom.

I’ve been invited to print castings at Armstrong Casting a couple times this year and I always enjoy the experience.  First the photographer takes a couple photos, then they flip on a video camera and ask a couple questions so they can get a better sense of who you are.

Special thanks to Casting Directors Ross Lacy and Yvonne Armstrong for the auditions.
